73 soldiers and 73 trees
On February 4, 1997, two Israel Air Force helicopters collided in in Northern Israel. They were carrying 73 Israeli soldiers into the security zone in Southern Lebanon. This was the worst helicopter disaster in Israeli history.
The "Forest of the Fallen" planted in memory of this tragic event, is located on the southeast edge of our community, She'arYeshuv. Each of its 73 trees represents one of the 73 victims.
Strangely, one almond tree stands out from the other 72 trees, distinct in its lavish white blooms. The tale relates that the white, delicate almond flowers are reminiscent of the fact that on the eve of the crash it snowed…
